Nuclear Myosins

page updated 20/5/03

A number of studies have indicates the presence of myosins in the nucleus, but this issue has been clouded by the same doubts that surrounds the issue of nuclear actins.

Myosin I.  Myosin I -like proteins have been reported in the nucleus originally by immunofluorescence using antibodies raised against cytoplasmic myosin I.  A monoclonal antibody against Acanthamoeba myosin I decorated the nucleus of not just Acanthamoeba nucleus, but those of vertebrate nuclei (Rimm & Pollard, 1989).  Similarly, affinity purified polyclonal antibodies raised against adrenal myosin I were discovered to reveal the presence of staining in the nucleus (Nowack et al, 1987).  The immuno-reactive species present in 3T3 cells were of 116 kDa and 120 kDa, the latter of which was specifically present in isolated nuclei.  This protein has now been cloned (Pestic-Dragovich et al, 2000) and found to be a typical myosin I b but with a 16 residues N-terminal extension.
