EF-1a
is a pH-sensitive actin binding protein present in presumably all eukaryotic
cells as it is pivotally involved in mRNA translation. EF-1a
also binds microtubules and in some circumstances, severs them (Shiina
et al, 1994).
EF-1a
can bind microfilaments (Moore,
& Cyr, 2000)
and microtubules (Itano
& Hatano, 1991).
The EF-1a gene has also been found to be important in deciphering phylogenetic
relationships (Berberich
et al, 1995;
Roger
et al, 1999; Gaucher
et al, 2001).
