The
presence of this protein in preparations of the ABP
vinculin caused
confusion. Vinculin was at first identified as an ABP, but then it was
discovered that a 25kDa inhibitor of actin polymerization was subsequently found
(Miron et al,
1991). Now it appears that actually vinculin is an ABP, but that the actin
binding is masked by the folding of the molecule in a similar manner to the ERM
family.
