Once amoeba have
been obtained, either by direct isolation from environments (Amoeba
isolation), or form commercial or other cultures it can be
very important to establish optimum culture conditions
immediately. Many amoeba are able to form resilient cysts
and so can be ignored and abused with comparative impunity! In
general, the smaller the amoeba, the less trouble they are to
maintain! The so called giant amoeba (species belonging to
the genera, Amoeba, Chaos, Pelomyxa) require
constant care, feeding and general sub-culturing, whereas an
amoeboflagellate SLB has been recovered on dried salty plates
three years old as this amoeba forms very tough cysts!
A list of media follows, the vast
majority of these recipes comes from the work of others and I merely pass this information on with comment
drawn from my own experience.
