Polychaos timidum
Palmate, multipodal form 45-60 mm
in length by 35-50 mm in breadth. Monopodal
forms 80-100mm in length (Bovee
1972). Rates of motility vary with
form, palmate forms 60-80mm/min, monopodal
forms 100-130mm/min. The uroid contains
hyaline spike described as originating from former pseudopods rather
that being trailing filopods resulting from adhesions as is usual for
uroidal projections. The cytoplasm contains numerous
crystals. Contractile vacuoles form near the nucleus at about 1mm
in diameter, they then travel down toward the uroid growing to 5-6mm.
They then fuse with the cell membrane. No cysts. This amoeba
is negatively phototactic and occurs world wide in freshwater. It is
bactivorous.
