The validity of this
genus is not at all certain (Page 1983), but it would be part of the
family Amoebidae. The genus was established for a small number of
species, Metachaos gratum, M. oxyuris, M.
discoides and a marine species M. fluvum by Schaeffer (Shaeffer
1926). An algivorous Metachaos
species has been reported in waters of the east antartic coast (Mayes
et al, 1998). Metachaos discoides
is the type species, it is up to 450mm in
length and much like Amoeba proteus except that the pseudopods
are round or oval in cross section. M. discoides has crystalline
